The dry eye syndrome (DES) market will reach to 4.9 billion US$ in 2024! An effective medication for treating DES is demanded! Lutein is a common ingredient in healthy food, people take lutein tablets to keep vision function. However, oral administration of lutein in monkeys revealed high lutein amount accumulated in heart, liver, and kidneys; very low lutein content was detected in eye. Long-term taking lutein is a risk to cause liver/kidneys damages. A novel lutein eye drop is developed to instead the oral way for eye treatment especially in DES. Lutein was tested in human corneal epithelium cells (HCECs), low concentration of lutein was nontoxicity to HCECs, and it can retain on the eyes for longer time. The results indicated lutein can decreased the inflammation gene (IL1b, IL6, and TNFa) expression in cells and DES mice. The DES mice treated by lutein eye drop showed damaged corneal recovery, tear amount increasement, and inflammatory relief, it’s a new choice for DES in clinics
