Technical Name Enhancement of freshness preservation capabilities for Taiwanese endemic fruits and vegetables by development of packaging materials derived from domestic sustainable materials
Project Operator School of Forestry and Resource Conservation, National Taiwan University
Project Host 柯淳涵
Summary
Cellulose nanomaterials have some properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, renewable, high specific strength and stiffness, high specific surface area and high transparency, these awesome properties give cellulose nanomaterials several advantages to be used in the food applications. Therefore, it has potential used in the food applications and deserves to be studied more widely in the future.
Scientific Breakthrough
According to the ethylene penetration test, the amount of ethylene in the banana coated with cerium oxide and nano cellulose was measured. The weight loss rate of bananas of cerium oxide and nano cellulose packaging paper is significantly reduced, so it can be speculated that the packaging material has the ability to adsorb ethylene.
Industrial Applicability
This research develops new packaging materials, increases the shelf life, enhances Taiwan's vegetable and fruit export market, expands domestic high-quality fruit and vegetable exports, and expands the export volume and value of Taiwan's fruits and vegetables. For food fresh-keeping packaging materials or farmers who are interested in food preservation, if farmers and vegetable farmers are potential cooperatives.
