Technical Name Ring focused ultrasound system for non-invasive treatment of breast cancer
Project Operator National Health Research Institutes
Project Host 陳景欣
Summary
We have developed a novel HIFU breast ablation system to kill cancer cells noninvasively, safely and precisely under MRI guidance. Compared with the present products, the ring HIFU system provides low-risk, short-time and low-cost treatment. The phantom, ex vivo and animal studies have verified the feasibility of the ring HIFU system. The system prototype is a promising tool for clinical implementation.
Scientific Breakthrough
The current HIFU breast ablation systems pose many problems, such as skin burn, pectoral muscle edema, the limited treatment range, long treatment time, high complexity of operation and cost. Our ring HIFU system provides four solutions: Parallel acoustic path, preventing damage to ribs and muscle; Volumetric ablation, reducing treatment time; Large acoustic window, avoiding skin burn; Only 16 elements.
Industrial Applicability
The ring focused ultrasound system for non-invasive treatment of breast cancer belongs to the high-end and class-II/III medical device. It benefits to promotion of the product and entrance into market. Furthermore, the feasibility of the system prototype has been proved by the animal study and the core technology has been patented. The next step is the technology transfer to industry and further commercialization.
