Technical Name Artificial blood feeding for mosquitobiting midge
Project Operator Chia-Nan University of PharmacyScience
Project Host 羅怡珮
Summary
A freeze-dried artificial blood dietexplored the practical application of an artificial feeder for the mass rearing of Aedes mosquitoesbiting midge. These in vitro bioassay systems were developed for the high-throughput screening of novel compounds for their potential use as mosquito repellentsmosquito repellent textile
Scientific Breakthrough
Successful colonies of the biting midgesAedes mosquitoes were establishedmaintained in the laboratory by feeding blood with an artificial blood-feeding apparatus. The survival rate, fecundity, pupation, pupal emergence rates of females fed on artificial blood meals were not significantly different from the animal-fed ones. The artificial blood diet was convenienteasy to prepare.
Industrial Applicability
Mass rearing of the biting midgesAedes mosquitoes in the laboratory by feeding blood with an artificial blood-feeding apparatus. The artificial blood feederdiets were convenient, inexpensiveeasy to prepare. The in vitro bioassay for the quantitative evaluation of mosquito repellents is strong economic commercial value.
