Technical Name A technique to prepare Djulis pellet with policosanol
Project Operator National Pingtung university of Science and Technology

Summary
Djulis, gain patents from many countries, may significantly lower the cholesterol. However, no accurate functional composition has been identified. According to the literature, policosanol may inhibit the formation of cholesterol and increase the HDL, which has been proved by many papers. This technique used supercritical extraction to extract the policosanol from Djulis wasted hull and made into pellet. The extract contains high amount of policosanol as well as 5 triterpenes, squalene and 6 phytosterols ( more than 75 mg/g) . This confirms the functional compositions of lowering cholesterols from Djulis. Due to the high susceptibility to lipid oxidation, the extract was further made into pellet to improve its stability. It is also more efficient than microencapsulation usually applied. This is the first product of Djulis health foods in the form of pellet and quite competitive due to its special flavor and palatability.
Scientific Breakthrough
Djulis has been proven to exhibit the significant cholesterol lowering effect for many years through animal test. However, no accurate composition can be identified for the profound function. None of the related product or research can be found yet. In this technique, the amount of polycosanol, triterpene, squalene and phytosterol extracted by supercritical extraction was much higher than the raw material (25 times), and the mechanism of Djulis's cholesterol lowering was clarified. This extraction avoids the pollution of the environment from solvent extraction. Furthermore, instead of usual microencapsulation, the extract was then made into pellet to protect the functional composition from lipid oxidation. This make the product more stable, convenient and acceptable by the consumer.
Industrial Applicability
Due to the aging of global people, the health food market increased very fast especially products related to hyperlipidemia, which will reach US$15.5 billion in 2020. Djulis pellet can be used as one of the product in preventing hyperlipidemia. The high amount of polycosanols was extracted from the wasted djulis hull and then made into pellet with acceptable flavor. It not only confirm the bioactive compounds for anti-hyperlipidemia in djulis but also provide a protection to these compounds from lipid oxidation . For consumer, it is easy and convenient to maintain the health by just oral taking few pellets in busy daily life. And this product is suitable for mild patients and the business related to health food, nutrient or even fitness in gym.
