Technical Name Catalytic waste lignocellulose to glucose and furfural
Project Operator National Taiwan University
Project Host
Summary
This technique requires the use of a hot plate and a reflux device, and is micro-sealed during the reaction to avoid contamination of its reactants and to eliminate the pressure generated in the reaction. In the preparation of raw materials, it is also necessary to pre-treat the raw materials first, so as to facilitate the reaction of the catalyst in the subsequent reaction with the cellulose and hemicellulose in the raw materials.
Scientific Breakthrough
Lignocellulosic biomass, which comprises cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, is an excellent alternative to fossil feedstock for the synthesis of biochemical and biofuels.
The source can be recovered from rice straw, jute, bark and even paper waste. It can be one of the raw materials of this technology. This technology uses waste paper to convert cellulose into glucose through one-step conversion. And the yield of the product was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For the conversion of hemicellulose, we use it directly from jute. The previous studies shows the reaction requires at least a three-step reaction (from raw material conversion to xylose and further conversion to Arabinose, and finally to furfural), but this technology utilizes a the one-step procedure converts hemicellulose to furfural and uses HPLC to quantify the yield of the product.
Industrial Applicability
本技術能應用在綠色能源的部分,採用之原料不僅是從廢棄物中而來,且反應都採一步進行,降低過程中所有可能產生對環境之汙染。
