Summary
We have developed a novel centrifugal device for massive extraction of healthy mitochondria with a centrifuge used in general laboratories within 30 minutes. The experimental results confirmed that mitochondria with complete inner and outer membrane protein structures can be successfully extracted by the proposed device. The TEM images further confirm that the microfluidic-device-extracted mitochondria retained their complete outer membrane morphologies.
Scientific Breakthrough
The key innovation is a novel centrifugal device for massive extraction of healthy mitochondria within 30 minutes. Compared with the commercially available kits, the extraction time is shortened, the extraction amount and purity of the mitochondria are increased, and the mitochondrial activity is maintained. The extraction of different cells can be easily achieved by simply changing the microfluidic device.
Industrial Applicability
Mitochondria therapy is an emerging industry following cell therapy. The developed high-purity mitochondria extraction technology will greatly enhance it. Imitating the concept of stem cell transplantation, only the source is mitochondria, a derivative of cell. We hope to cooperate with a team with rich experience and expertise in cell therapy product development. Through clinical trials, Mitochondria therapy can be effectively commercialized.
