Technical Name Multi-functional EU EBB for Image Compression and Mass Storage
Project Operator Taiwan Space Agency
Project Host 陳嘉瑞
Summary
"The Electronics Unit (EU) receives image data from five input channels (PAN1, PAN2, MS12, MS34, and MS56) at an aggregate input data rate of 7 Gbps.
The received image data are processed by the Image Processing Module (IPM), which performs JPEG2000 compression, including Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and entropy coding. The compressed image data are subsequently stored in the Solid-State Recorder (SSR), which provides:
•16 Tbits of NAND flash memory capacity.
•Storage for up to 1,024 files.
•Built-in Error Correction Code (ECC) for data integrity protection.
•Image data output via eight 100-MHz LVDS channels.
The EU has an approximate mass of 14 kg and an average power consumption of 250 W.
Scientific Breakthrough
The engineering model will undergo space environmental qualification tests, including thermal vacuum (TVAC), vibration, shock, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests, to validate its suitability for use as the Electronics Unit (EU) of a satellite optical payload.

The EU provides functions including system control, high-speed data transmission, image compression, and data storage.
Industrial Applicability
The JPEG2000 compression IP employs Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to achieve high compression efficiency for satellite remote sensing imagery. A single FPGA is capable of performing JPEG2000 compression for all spectral bands, including the panchromatic (grayscale) band. Integrated with the Solid-State Recorder (SSD), it provides high-capacity onboard image storage.
