Technical Name Formosat-8 Focal Plane Assembly (FPA)
Project Operator Taiwan Space Agency
Project Host 黃博彥
Summary
The FORMOSAT-8 focal plane assembly is the core imaging component of the satellite payload. Using linear time delay integration image sensor technology, it provides one panchromatic and six multispectral bands with 1-meter and 2-meter image resolution. Dual panchromatic channels with a half-pixel offset and ground image reconstruction further enhance the effective resolution to approximately 0.7-meter sub-meter imagery.
Scientific Breakthrough
The FORMOSAT-8 focal plane assembly provides 1-meter panchromatic and 2-meter multispectral resolution, representing Taiwans highest-resolution optical remote sensing payload. It is also the first Taiwanese remote sensing satellite to adopt time delay integration technology, improving low-light image quality and reducing motion blur. Combined with dual panchromatic channels and half-pixel offset image reconstruction, the system can achieve approximately 0.7-meter sub-meter image resolution.
Industrial Applicability
The developed high-resolution linear TDI imaging technology can be applied to low-light automated optical inspection, wafer inspection, panel inspection, and smart manufacturing. The technology improves image quality and defect detection capability for high-speed inspection applications, providing strong potential for advanced industrial imaging and precision measurement systems.
