Summary
It is reported that only 65% of newborns get properly worn and fixed. The problem should be that current common-used eye protectors always come with head fixing belts, but are short of fitting into both infants and premature Infants with different head circumference and pupil distance. Furthermore, the shedding of eye protector due to head rotation may induce serious retina lesions. These are pressing problems for newborn care. We would like to develop a multi-functional medical eye protector that can be used to protect eyes from irradiation during phototherapy treatment. The features of protector should include free-of-fixing-belt, repeatable stick, and adjustable pupil distance in order to prevent its unpredictable shedding and fit any newborn with different head circumference. Soft substrates, like cotton fabrics and nonwovens, are considered to laminate a reflective fabric to be a multilayered mask cloth for contact not only baby but also any patient.
Scientific Breakthrough
The development features of the product include massage, masking, adjustable eye distance, and skin-adhesive design, detailed as follows:
1. Design with no straps, repetitive adhesion and adjustable length between eye distances, is performed and suitable for neonates and premature infants with different head types.
2. At the location of the lacrimal sac below the orbit of the eye socket, a massage cushion is provided inside to provide medical massage to avoid infection caused by hands.
3. The mask has the function of avoiding light.
4. The patch for sticking can be used repeatably and has passed the biocompatibility tests, such as cytotoxicity test, skin sensitization test, and skin irritation test; and it has passed the peel-off test without resisual glue.
Industrial Applicability
The innovative concept is driven from our neonatal intensive care experience. There are about 0.18 M newborns every year and20 % of them are prescribed to undergo phototherapy for the treatment of neonatal jaundice. During the therapy, the newborns should be worn by eye protectors to protect their eyes from UV irradiation; however, failed fixing often induces eye disease. It can be extended to many different products to major markets such as neonatal wards, baby rooms, ophthalmology wards, adult intensive care wards, dermatology, and can be extended to medical beauty centers and airlines. It is extended to patients with ophthalmic laser treatment, postoperative patients, nonclosable-eyed cases in ICU, sleep-disordered cases, or cases with weak eye muscle, and other commercial uses.
