Summary
This technology- Electromagnetic technology combined with active packaging application to establish an emerging fresh-keeping chain platform for agriculture and aquatic products was supported by the Ministry of Science (MOST- 103-2221-E-212-012,104-2221-E-005-098 -MY2,106-2221-E-005-093-MY3). The electric field combined with low temperature storage has the potential in inhibition of microorganisms and enzymes; preserving the postharvest quality of fruits, vegetables, and meats; retaining freshness in products for a better shelf life; and the rapid thawing of food. Besides, the active packaging via coating natural preservatives on the polyethylene surface by plasma to have better sensorial features and extended shelf-life, thus ensuring enhanced food quality and safety. Active packaging showed inhibition of bacterial on fish, delayed the formation of volatile basic nitrogen and thiobarbituric acid. This technology succeeds to improve food safety while reducing food waste in our country.
Scientific Breakthrough
This technology- Electromagnetic technology combined with active packaging application to establish an emerging fresh-keeping chain platform. Our studies found that electromagnetic field pretreatment successfully extend the shelf life of agriculture and aquatic products about 2 times. Fish sample packaged with active packaging effectively maintains the appearance, reduce the total plate count 0.2 times, VBN 0.9 times, TBA 0.3 times, extended the shelf life of fish to five days, and doubled the shelf life than conventional packaging. This technology is based on current preservation technology and combined with electromagnetic technology to create a higher preservation effect, while also satisfying consumers' demands for avoiding the use of chemical preservation agents.
Industrial Applicability
The electromagnetic field pretreatment combined with active packaging application for agriculture and aquatic product preservation could overcome industrial loss caused by food deterioration. Electromagnetic field technology device requires only a high voltage generator and insulation protection some more not affected by space area thence easy to operate and can apply directly at production line. The plasma technology facilitates the combination with nature preservatives has simple operation steps, short time required and can inhibit the pathogens growing in the food to delay food deterioration. Besides, this technology does not use any chemicals, environmental protection, and has no residue. Moreover, the uses of natural preservatives are secured than traditional chemical preservatives.
