Technical Name Using novel BPH-resistant rice to establish an Intelligent BPH-monitoring system and efficient BPH resistance screening techniques
Project Operator National Chung Hsing University/Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
Project Host 李長沛/ 賴明信 /吳東鴻 /陳良築 等
Summary
1.The Brown Planthopper (BPH)-resistant line TNG71-Bph31(t) is a newly bred elite aromatic rice which exhibits strong BPH resistance. BPH is a critical pest to rice and affects rice production in the 2nd crop season with up to 30% of agricultural loss.
2.This novel Bph31(t) gene has not been introduced in cultivation and its strong efficacy against BPH makes this line ideal for organic cultivation.
3.In addition to selection of suitable lines for organic production in 3 demonstration farms, EPG-assisted Screening Platform was developed to determine insect feeding patterns to accelerate identification of insect-resistance rice lines.
4.An intelligent BPH-monitoring technique was also developed by outfitting portable devices with image capture capabilities to quickly obtain insect population images with high accuracy to determine optimal timing for deployment of prevention and/or pest-control resources.
Scientific Breakthrough
1.The novel Bph31(t) gene locus exhibiting strong BPH resistance has never been reported or used in cultivation makes it ideal for research and applications.
2.Establish an intelligent platform for pest monitoring, provide time indicators for prevention and improve efficiency of utilizing pest control resources.
3.Introduce AC-DC EPG technology to monitor BPH feeding which can reduce testing and breeding time of rice.
Industrial Applicability
1.Promotion of insect-resistant rice can reduce pesticide usage and greatly increase feasibility of organic cultivation.
2.Establish intelligent platforms for pest monitoring to implement an early warning system and enable efficient pest-control performance.
3.Utilize AC-DC EPG technology can accelerate seedlings detection to shorten the breeding process and to develop new insect-resistant rice variety effectively.
