Technical Description Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique has become an indispensable tool for human brain mapping. The participant is usually instructed to maintain a steady head position during an MRI exam. However, it is difficult for most people to stay immobilized. Practically, head motion is inevitable and results in significant image artifact, especially for pediatrics, elderly people or patients suffering from stroke or Parkinson's disease. This problem not only happens in clinical imaging, but also in research.
Therefore, we develop a real-time head motion correction system, consisting of accelerometer sensors and magnetometer, for existing MRI system. The collected head pose information will be sent to MRI console directly for adapting scan geometry to real-time compensate for patient motion during data acquisition. In brief, combining with the real-time MRI data analysis system, it undoubtedly facilitates the clinical diagnosis and academic progress of MRI investigations.
Scientific Breakthrough It is the world's first technology with the integration of accelerometer and magnetometer to estimate the head motion of the subject during MRI exam. The real-time detection of head rotation matrix will be used to correct the MRI brain image and improve the image quality by reducing the motion artifact. It can be used to avoid the waste of time and money caused by the head motion during the MRI scan in the hospital. Our technology also can provide the benefit in clinics, especially for young children, elders and the patients with stroke or Parkinson's disease who might be hard to maintain a steady head position.
Industrial Applicability Since brain science research has gradually become mainstream, it is very important to develop high-speed imaging technology, anti-motion noise imaging sequence, and head motion detection and correction technology. We think this technology have good industrial applicability when saw the related products sold by foreign manufacturers. If this technology can be transferred to the industry successfully in the future, it will be able to assist domestic industry. And it can also be used as an innovative industrial application for the development of medical instruments in Taiwan.
