Summary
Combining agricultural resource (cattle manure) with circular economy principle, it can be pollution-free converted into mesoporous carbon material under the special conditions of chemical activation, which possesses high BET surface area and total pore volume of 2,000 m2/g and 1.4 cm3/g, respectively.  This special carbon material will be suitable for uses in the negative electrode of energy-storage batteries.  It means that coal pitch (traditional highly-polluting feedstock) can be replaced by cattle manure (novel pollution-free feedstock).
Scientific Breakthrough
1.The main objective of this product-oriented technology is to utilize Holstein cattle (the most important ruminant in Taiwan) manure residue (about 1,200,000 metric ton based on 130,000 heads and 25 kg manure per head produced) as a starting precursor (CM) in the production of activated carbon (CM-AC), which is characteristic of its ultra-high surface area.  This approach will solve the environmental problems (e.g., air/odor pollution, greenhouse gases CO2/CH4/N2O emissions) caused by the residue composting (one of organic fertilizers) for soil modification.  These resulting carbon materials not only mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, but also utilize this biomass as feedstock for industrial materials.
2.Combining agricultural resource (cattle manure) with circular economy principle, it can be pollution-free converted into mesoporous carbon material under the special conditions of potassium salt activation, which possesses high BET surface area and total pore volume of 2,000 m2/g and 1.4 cm3/g, respectively. This special carbon material will be suitable for uses in the negative electrode of energy-storage batteries (specific capacitance≧100 F/g). On the other hand, this resulting carbon material can be reused as efficient adsorbent foe removal of environmental organic pollutants and odors.
3.CM-AC products are special carbon materials used in the applications of electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) and lithium-ion cell (LIC). Due to its high power density and fast recharge-charge, it can be applied in a variety of commercial products, including memory devices (consumer electronics, mobile phone), renewable power system and electric vehicle. Among them, electric vehicle will be the largest commercial application value.
4.In brief, these resulting carbon materials can be used as environment- protecting adsorbents and energy-storing negative electrode material for EDLC and LIC. More importantly, this product and its applications match the scopes of “5+2” innovation industries under the promotion of the central government, including green energy technology, circular economy and new agriculture.
