Technical Description RO is a popular method in the water purification process. However, the high cost and replacement rate are the major drawbacks of RO. Using RO leads to generate additional (40-300%) RO wastewater to be discharged. Thus, the new fluidized capacitive deionization (FdCDI) using mesoporous and high surface area active carbon (AC) as the fluidized electrodes for capture of unwanted ion for drinking by electrosorption. By applying a low voltage, unwanted ions in drinking water can be electrosorbed on the fluidized AC electrodes. When becoming the saturation, the electrosorbed ions can be concentrated by applying zero voltage and a very small amount of wastewater may be yielded. The FdCDI key technology including low-cost, low-energy demand and high flexibility for contaminated water. This technology is expected to be widely used for recycling of RO wastewater, or even the substitution of the RO. The FdCDI water purifier can highly reduce the operational cost.
Scientific Breakthrough The FdCDI are to settle in RO system with easy and low-cost method. Compared to conventional fixed carbon electrode, FdCDI uses fluidized AC electrodes to form electric double layer to adsorb the ions charge on the carbon electrodes and remove ions from water. In addition, the electrode composite with iron would have magnetic property which is beneficial during desorption process. Moreover, with automated design, the adsorption and desorption flow could be separated more convenient in the practical used. Also, the electrodes could reuse according to the adsorption- desorption mechanism, so the waste could recycle and reach the cyclic economics. Thus, with low energy demand FdCDI not only could reduce the waste but also increase the use of water sources.
Industrial Applicability FdCDI is a valuable application with the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation and renewable unit design. Thus, it is also available for different customers, like industrial or civil requirements and various RO system. This novel technique could achieve both environmentally friendly and low-cost goal and create much more economic value.
